In Hebrew, Michaela means "Who is like God." Also in Hebrew, Marie means, "Wished for child." Michaela Marie Olson was born on January 3, 1996. During her sixteen years of life, Michaela touched many hearts and made a difference in all who had the privilege of knowing her.

As a Christian, she stood strong in her beliefs and was granted permission to put together a Bible Study at school. This happened two months before school got out, so it never came to pass. But that didn't stop her faith. Her outreach continued as she would bring friends from school to her Youth Group..

In 2010, Michaela decided to try out for soccer. She made the team, but her breathing issues began and forced her to quit halfway through the season. Even after being diagnosed with asthma, her problems continued. In January of 2012, Michaela's doctor referred her to an asthma specialist. She never had asthma. She was then diagnosed with vocal chord dysfunction.

On July 1, 2012, Michaela left for a jog around 8:30am. At 9:05am, a neighbor called to tell us that an EMS crew was working on a young girl who had collapsed near her house. It was Michaela. After an autopsy, we learned she had come in contact with a common, easily treated fungus called Histoplasmosis. Had her doctors not misdiagnosed her, Michaela would still be with us today.

In her honor, Michaela's parents, with the help of family and friends, put together the 2nd Annual Michaela Olson Memorial Ride and Dine Fundraiser to raise awareness about this sometimes deadly fungus. Proceeds will help to raise awareness and sponsor youth mission trips. In this way, Michaela's life and legacy carries on.
